Bob999
Hello I’m new to this forum so please treat me gently. I’m trying to sort the steering on daughters 03 MK6 1.4 petrol Fiesta. The symptoms are:- most of the time it works ok but if ithas to work a bit harder for instance when she’s reversing into a parking placeor manoeuvring at low speed the steering makes a juddering noise and doesn’tprovide very much assistance, this is accompanied by a smell of burning rubber. So far I’ve replaced the drive belt and fluid. I replacedthe fluid by sucking as much as I could from the reservoir, replacing with newfluid, moving the steering from side to side a number of times and repeatingthe process about 5 times. This seemed to help a bit but it’s still there. The next thing I plan is to replace the pump, I’ve got a known good used one but I’ve hit a snag. The high pressure line from the pumphas what I believe is a PTFE sealing washer on it. When I removed thereplacement pump from the donor car the washer was chewed up and I anticipatethe same will happen when I remove the one from her car. My questions are:- from the description of the fault does itsound like the pump is the problem and if I do replace it where can I get thesesealing washers? I’ve tried the local Ford spares dept and they can’t supplythem, I’ve done a search and can’t obviously find a source. It looks like Fordwould like to supply a new pipe complete with washer, this seems a bit wasteful. Apologies for the long post and thanks in advance for any help
DieselPig
Use some plumbers PTFE tape on the thread, my Mondeo power steering pump went and it had the same chewed PTFE washer.

iantt
I even made a sleeve to slide the new seal over the threads so not damaging the new seal
Bob999
Im sure you can get the washer for it from ford, ive used new washers , white ones. When I enquired about these today the guy showed me the parts diagram and it's not shown as a separate part. They may be used for a different application or they may sold as a separate part but unless I can point it out on their parts diagram or give them a part number I think it could be a challenge. Don't get me wrong they're not unhelpful but I unless I can give them a bit more info I not sure what I can do.

Bob999
Will check tommorow the part number of the ones ive used, and make sure there applicable to your car. Did you get anywhere with this? Cheers Are these pumps so reliable that no one is replacing them? Or is it just such a horrible job, I ended up power steering fluid everywhere, that no one does it themselves?
iantt
Sorry , completley forgot, will try to remember tommorow, the fiesta 1.4 pump fitting instructions show fitting new seal with special tool, "Using the special tool, install a new O-ring seal onto the power steering line to power steering pump union. Push the O-ring seal onto the special tool.Locate the special tool onto the union and install the O-ring seal." Will check part number for you tommorow
Bob999
Ian Thanks in advance, I’ve seen the diagram with the tool it’s obviously to get the seal over the threads without damage. I normally use tape when installing lipped seals over shafts and had planned to do them same here.
iantt
Hi, 3518119 is the ford part number that comes up for 1.4 petrol 03 fiesta p/s union seal, same his one in the photo. Just under£5 which is a rip off for the size. Lol As you can see the teflon seal has to stretch to the end of my special tool then slides on to union
