New 1.0L Ecoboost engine?

Hi all,

I bought my 2013 Ford Focus Mk3 used and the valve cover sticker says January 2021. It’s done 70,000 miles to date and I’ve done about 7k of these, no issues apart from a metallic rattle at around 1200RPM when I throttle or release throttle (I think its a turbo rattle when it kicks in).

See pictures.

Do you think the engine was changed or could this just be a valve cover change? What would be the reason for changing only the valve cover?

I changed the oil myself and oil looks ok (normal colour, no metal fragments, no frothing).

It also looks like the degas pipe is new (post 2013) so I’m thinking maybe the engine was fried and then changed, but why would the previous owner sell it to me 9 months after such job.. and no issues for the 7k miles I’ve driven…

Scanned OBD2 and there are no codes.

Let me know what you think!

Thanks,

P .

This is definitely a replacement engine.

F1FG-6006-BA is the part number of a 120/125/140 HP service engine for a Focus MK3/MK3.5, Transit/Tourneo Connect, C-max/Grand C-max MK2/MK2.5 and Mondeo MK5.

Even though it might be fine now, they probably had a horrific experience with it leaving them stranded on a dark motorway somewhere...  Then had to go through all the hassle and expense of a replacement engine.  I've regularly sold cars after horrendous experiences in them.

Yes, as Tom says, once you've had a bad experience (even when properly sorted) you do tend to lose confidence/fall out of love with a car and probably part with it sooner than you might otherwise have done.

I've parted with cars in much less than 9 months in the past - even new ones!

It was sold to me with no service history so perhaps they wanted to hide the fact that the engine was changed, no idea.

If it would have come with a new timing belt then I'm sorted.

Do you know if there are any issues that would come with a replaced engine anywhere else on the car?

Thanks for your inputs!

A genuine Ford service engine like this comes as a complete unit including the sump, wetbelts engine cover, valve cover, etc. Only all external parts and auxiliaries will be transferred from the original engine.

Since a genuine Ford service engine contains new wetbelts the next wetbelt change will be scheduled 10 Years after the production date of the service engine which in this case is January 2031.
