I'm on digital thru my router, that now means if ive no power, i've no landline and i kept it for emergency purposes, so if taken ill and start calling 999 they know where i am. Basically am now stuffed. Wasnt it the nornm that if you had a wired landline companies etc knew where you were and gave discounts or bonus point for having such, it proved you wernt a fly by night !

So i can now dump the landline ?

I almost feel vilified having tried to lobby against this since I 1st learned about it 4 years ago. This 'improvement' in service will eventually cost lives. Just because something is new, does not mean it's better.

It's like when I started the 'energy' thread years ago as soon as I learned that government were on path to make the sale of petrol cars illegal. I felt I couldn't be the only one that could see how stupid this was, but as the deadline rolled on, folk realised it was too late to do anything about it.

Those that now advocate for a 'cashless' society, haven't a clue what the consequences will eventually be. I'm glad I'm old...

TBF i operate predominantly cashless, it suits my lifestyle. Am like the old Queen, i dont carry cash not even 10p for a phone call, or 5p for a toilet.

I'm ok with a mobile

With a protracted mains fail, your mobile might be fully charged, and you can plug it into a car charger...........  But, what is the autonomy of the battery support at the local cell site ?

Not like me to be cynical (!), but with increasing demand on electricity, without a corresponding increase in generating capacity, (Dividends to shareholders more important than investing) then mains failures will only be more frequent.

and of course, you need to be in an area where you get a mobile signal! I get so angry when mobile operators advertise 99% coverage. That is b*llox!! I can take them to numerous places, (including my house, and my mums house) where there is NO mobile coverage. In an urban area yes, you'll be just fine, but in rural areas, not so good...

99% coverage

This is population, not geographical, so in UK, this could mean 660,000 people without coverage ?

Indeed, and in a powercut, with no mobile, or landline, who can foresee any issues?? 🤣

I use Windows 7 on a Dell Latitude 3570 laptop. Using Firefox Browser 115.8.0esr (64-bit)

Same here, I'm using Windows 7 Professional SP1 on a home-built desktop PC with the exact same browser version as you, which my screenshot came from, and as I said although I've clearly got the 'check spelling as you type' selected it doesn't auto-correct or highlight errors. I suspect there is no way to remove the US disctionary as it's US software and we know how Americans like to try to impose their culture on everyone else.

The fact yours does auto-correct (or is it auto-complete?) makes me think you've got some add-on installed somewhere. I'd have a look in Settings > Extensions & Themes and see if you can find anything there.

It just underlines in red any spelling it's not happy with. It even underlines any thing I choose to select and quote from another user.

I've tried a few websites and the problem only seems to be the Ford Owners Club, and the Jaguar Owners Club. Of course both seem to using American software hence the date being shown backwards.

Hmm... If it only affects those two sites it can't be a rogue add-on in Firefox. I can't find any settings at all for spelling in the FOC website so it's a bit of a mystery. Is it possible you get extra settings as a paid supporter?

Not that I've noticed. My thoughts are that Firefox is detecting something on the site that makes it assume it is American, and that causes my spell checker to switch to "broken English" 🤣

Spell check works just fine for me here on Linux, both with Firefox versions 123.0 and 115.8.0esr. If I right click on a text box I have 'check spelling' enabled and UK English selected rather than US. I checked with both this forum and another website in both versions and 'color' is correctly highlighted as wrong. I do recall having problems in the past but don't recall any useful details, not even if this was on Linux or Windows. The dictionary and possibly software library for handling the dictionary may differ significantly between Windows and Linux, I think here on Linux a third-party software package and dictionary are being used, rather than a Firefox Dictionary add-on.

It's certainly not going to be a subscriber perk.

It could be a bug on Windows, or considering it only affects a couple of websites, the websites doing something unusual that trips up the spell checking functionality on Windows only, or could it be only specific types of input field that it's not working on on Windows? Maybe you have a buggy add-on that's interfering?

Doing a quick bit of googling one resource suggests that spell checking can be enabled/disabled on a per-website/tab basis. You should check the checkbox and language from the right click menu while on this website.

Been checked many times before and nothing seems to be incorrectly set. I'll maybe try a different browser and see what happens.

Thought I'd resurrect this post one last time. It started with me berating the tidiness of a fiber installation at someone else's house. Today, I got fiber fitted to my own house and was chatting the the installation engineer.

Anyway, after our chat, he popped back to his van, and asked if he'd like me to install an ONT box case? Well, of course I did. It's not a 'normal' installation piece he said but he could tell I was a nuisance. Chuffed to bits with the installation. The case just tidied the ONT box away, leaving a gap at the bottom for the power, and Ethernet cable to be exposed.

More importantly, it also protects the very fine fiber optic wire that 'dangles' on a standard installation.
