Hi all I had this fault code flag up on my dash the other night and the gearbox go into limp mode. I pulled over when safe to do so and cycled the ignition which cleared the error and made it the rest of way to the airport car park I was going to with no further issues (only about 8 miles left of the journey).

Unfortunately I was driving at the back of ten at night and flying out first thing the next day. I've only had the car 6 weeks so I've got hold of the supplier and got it booked in for diagnostics with them but not until the end of the month when I'm back and also due to diagnostic technician availability at their end. Just got to hope it makes it the 190 mile journey home without further glitches.

I did drop into the airport car park the next morning before flying out and gave it a quick drive around and it seems perfectly fine going up and down through the gears.

Does anyone know if the fault code will stay in the unit for this length of time or am I going to be farting against thunder?

I did a bit of reading up and asked the dealer if the gearbox got its 37500 mile service and he thinks it has at around the 44k mark albeit this is from some system he has access to as it was previously a lease car, currently it's sat at 53k. Unfortunately they didn't stamp the log book so I don't know what dealer did the service, I asked for the details but the guy hasn't got back to me yet, he's surmised it has been done as the service at 44k cost over £500 so he thinks a standard service plus the gearbox service.

Apologies for a bit of a ramble

Who knows 🤷‍♂️. Without knowing what the fault code is, we can't help you. Just saying your car is in limp mode and had a something come up on the dash sums up most issues on a modern car...

It's dead easy to get the code yourself using Forscan and a modified Elm327 cable.

The most important thing to do is to have 100% proof that the trans oil and filter was done, no if's, but's or opinions that "think" it was.

If it cannot be proven get the oil and filter changed. There are plenty of, and bad, video's on You Tube how to do it. Labour time to do it is quite low but genuine oil and filter is what makes the job expensive.

As Luke says you can get a code reader to id the fault code. The code(s) need clearing anyway to start with.

If the oil and filter is done let the old filter drain down for say a day and then examine it very very carefully and look for minute particles of white/cream coloured bits of plastic, if you find any it is the first signs of the front clutch breaking up.

I see your veh is a 2017 so it must be a Mk5 Mondeo, it therefore must be a diesel, if not a diesel it will not have the Getrag 6DCT450 Powershift trans in it. (yes, just noticed in your heading, 2L 150, so 150 ps will be diesel on a 2 litre - 2 litre petrol will be 240ps)

Assume you are using a Ford dealer or someone who knows what they are doing?

Cheers guys yeah it's going into a main Ford dealer under warranty for diagnostics.

I've emailed the guy I bought the car through for more info on this past service, if he won't get me it I'll try and go straight to the lease company that owned it and see if they'll help with the info.

I hear what you're saying about any potential oil contamination, I take it the plastic is from the pics I've seen online retaining the springs in the 6DCT450.

I got a full 60 day warranty with the car so it's going in under that but also bought an extended 2 year warranty through the dealer (Arnold Clark) so fingers crossed no bills.

The reason I asked about fault codes is I was hunting online and saw a few folk with various Ford's with this box saying they'd had this error flag up only to not find a fault code, not sure if this is because they weren't using a Forscan unit and possibly a standard code reader?

The reason I was asking if the fault code would stay logged is I'm offshore at the minute for two weeks but looks like I'll be ordering a code reader for the OBD port for my own peace of mind.

Do either of you have any recommendations for a bluetooth one, I'm thinking it may be handy to keep in the car so if it flags up while I'm away I can use it with my phone?

  • 3 weeks later...

Finally got it in the garage yesterday, flagged up as an EGR issue. Garage has cleared the fault code and we'll monitor, I've driven it about 400-500 miles since with no issues so hopefully it was just a glitch.

Hi Davie, sorry only just picked up you last post a few minutes ago

It could well be an egr problem as it is not unknown on the Mk5 - little bit surprised it has happened on your 2017 model but obviously it can/could do.

There was a batch of 2015 diesels that did have a run of egr failure/faults that caused one to think that the Getrag Powershift trans was at fault
